Situated in the heart of South Yorkshire, Barnsley enjoys strong transport connections across the North and North West. The development of its primary transport hub - Barnsley Interchange - has created a combined rail and bus station that connects the town to neighbouring cities such as Sheffield,Leeds, Nottingham and Doncaster.
Barnsley is also located between junctions 36 and 38 of the M1 motorway which serves as a direct link between the North and South.
The town used to be centred on its coal mining industry, although all mines in the borough are now closed for service, with the last closing back in 1994. Since the Metropolitan Borough Council has worked hard to regenerate the town with its project 'Rethinking Barnsley' successfully developing the new transport interchange, a new cultural centre and an expansion of job opportunities in the town with its new digital media centre and large retail units.
