Bedford is already home to a wide variety of internationally-recognised companies, including Nissan, Fujifilm and Unilever, each of whom have invested in Bedford's commercial infrastructure, giving it a competitive edge over neighbouring towns and cities in East Anglia and the Midlands.
The town is served by two railway stations that connect Bedford to London King's Cross within 35 minutes. Meanwhile the A6 trunk road provides direct road access to much of East Anglia and the East Midlands.
It is also a culturally diverse district, with almost one-in-three residents said to be of Italian descent. Bedford and the majority of the county was previously the home of England's lace industry, with a number of skilled lace-makers immigrating to the town. It continued to be an important industry up until the early 20th Century.
