Although the East Midlands is a region that’s been founded upon industrial roots, many of its major towns and cities are rapidly evolving, with service-based sectors beginning to rule the roost. The region is also becoming a key hub for retail, manufacturing and food processing companies. The main reason for the growth of retail and food processing sectors in the East Midlands is largely for logistical reasons, with close proximity to the M1, M6 and A1 motorways.

Plans are afoot to introduce the East Midlands in the second phase of the High Speed 2 railway project, which would create a new high-speed rail link between Birmingham and Leeds. It’s proposed that Toton would become the home of the East Midlands ‘hub’ station on this new line.
